Job 21:12

21:12 They sing to the accompaniment of tambourine and harp,

and make merry to the sound of the flute.

Job 30:31

30:31 My harp is used for mourning

and my flute for the sound of weeping.

tn The verb is simply “they take up [or lift up],” but the understood object is “their voices,” and so it means “they sing.”

tn The verb הָיָה (hayah, “to be”) followed by the preposition ל (lamed) means “to serve the purpose of” (see Gen 1:14ff., 17:7, etc.).
