John 10:25

10:25 Jesus replied, “I told you and you do not believe. The deeds I do in my Father’s name testify about me.

John 10:37

10:37 If I do not perform the deeds of my Father, do not believe me.

John 5:19-20

5:19 So Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth, the Son can do nothing on his own initiative, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. 5:20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he does, and will show him greater deeds than these, so that you will be amazed.

John 5:36

5:36 “But I have a testimony greater than that from John. For the deeds 10  that the Father has assigned me to complete – the deeds 11  I am now doing – testify about me that the Father has sent me.

Matthew 11:5

11:5 The blind see, the 12  lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news proclaimed to them.

Acts 2:22

2:22 “Men of Israel, 13  listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds, 14  wonders, and miraculous signs 15  that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know –

Acts 10:38

10:38 with respect to Jesus from Nazareth, 16  that 17  God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. He 18  went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, 19  because God was with him. 20

tn Grk “answered them.”

tn Or “the works.”

tn Or “do.”

tn Or “works.”

tn Grk “answered and said to them.”

tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

tn Grk “nothing from himself.”

tn Grk “that one”; the referent (the Father) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

sn What works does the Son do likewise? The same that the Father does – and the same that the rabbis recognized as legitimate works of God on the Sabbath (see note on working in v. 17). (1) Jesus grants life (just as the Father grants life) on the Sabbath. But as the Father gives physical life on the Sabbath, so the Son grants spiritual life (John 5:21; note the “greater things” mentioned in v. 20). (2) Jesus judges (determines the destiny of people) on the Sabbath, just as the Father judges those who die on the Sabbath, because the Father has granted authority to the Son to judge (John 5:22-23). But this is not all. Not only has this power been granted to Jesus in the present; it will be his in the future as well. In v. 28 there is a reference not to spiritually dead (only) but also physically dead. At their resurrection they respond to the Son as well.

10 tn Or “works.”

11 tn Grk “complete, which I am now doing”; the referent of the relative pronoun has been specified by repeating “deeds” from the previous clause.

12 tn Grk “and the,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more. Two other conjunctions are omitted in this series.

13 tn Or “Israelite men,” although this is less natural English. The Greek term here is ἀνήρ (anhr), which only exceptionally is used in a generic sense of both males and females. In this context, it is conceivable that this is a generic usage, although it can also be argued that Peter’s remarks were addressed primarily to the men present, even if women were there.

14 tn Or “miraculous deeds.”

15 tn Again, the context indicates the miraculous nature of these signs, and this is specified in the translation.

16 sn The somewhat awkward naming of Jesus as from Nazareth here is actually emphatic. He is the key subject of these key events.

17 tn Or “how.” The use of ὡς (Jws) as an equivalent to ὅτι (Joti) to introduce indirect or even direct discourse is well documented. BDAG 1105 s.v. ὡς 5 lists Acts 10:28 in this category.

18 tn Grk “power, who.” The relative pronoun was replaced by the pronoun “he,” and a new sentence was begun in the translation at this point to improve the English style, due to the length of the sentence in Greek.

19 tn The translation “healing all who were oppressed by the devil” is given in L&N 22.22.

20 sn See Acts 7:9.
