John 10:4-5

10:4 When he has brought all his own sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. 10:5 They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him, because they do not recognize the stranger’s voice.”

John 10:14-15

10:14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me – 10:15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep.

tn The word “sheep” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

tn Grk “because they know.”

tn Or “someone whom they do not know.”

tn Grk “know.”

tn Or “the voice of someone they do not know.”

tn Grk “And I.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

tn The direct object is frequently omitted in Greek and must be supplied from the context. Here it could be “sheep,” but Jesus was ultimately talking about “people.”

tn Or “I die willingly.”

tn Or “on behalf of” or “for the sake of.”
