John 11:20

11:20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house. ¹

4:6 Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside ²  the well. It was about noon. ³ 

John 20:12

20:12 And she saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’ body had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet.

¹ sn Notice the difference in the response of the two sisters: Martha went out to meet Jesus, while Mary remains sitting in the house. It is similar to the incident in Luke 10:38-42. Here again one finds Martha occupied with the responsibilities of hospitality; she is the one who greets Jesus.

² tn Grk “on (ἐπί, epi) the well.” There may have been a low stone rim encircling the well, or the reading of Ì⁶⁶ (“on the ground”) may be correct.
