John 12:5

12:5 “Why wasn’t this oil sold for three hundred silver coins and the money given to the poor?”

Acts 20:34-35

20:34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine provided for my needs and the needs of those who were with me. 20:35 By all these things, I have shown you that by working in this way we must help the weak, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Galatians 2:10

2:10 They requested only that we remember the poor, the very thing I also was eager to do.

Ephesians 4:28

4:28 The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.

tn Grk “three hundred denarii.” The denarius was a silver coin worth a standard day’s wage, so the value exceeded what a laborer could earn in a year (taking into account Sabbaths and feast days when no work was done).

tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied (as the proceeds from the sale of the perfumed oil).

tn The words “of mine” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied to clarify whose hands Paul is referring to.

sn The expression By all these things means “In everything I did.”

tn Or “must assist.”

tn Or “the sick.” See Eph 4:28.

sn The saying is similar to Matt 10:8. Service and generosity should be abundant. Interestingly, these exact words are not found in the gospels. Paul must have known of this saying from some other source.

tn Grk “only that we remember the poor”; the words “They requested” have been supplied from the context to make a complete English sentence.
