7:46 The officers replied, “No one ever spoke like this man!”

2:47 And all who heard Jesus ⁵  were astonished ⁶  at his understanding and his answers.

¹ tn Grk “And it happened when.” The introductory phrase καὶ ἐγένετο (kai egeneto, “it happened that”) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

² sn Jesus’ teaching impressed the hearers with the directness of its claim; he taught with authority. A study of Jewish rabbinic interpretation shows that it was typical to cite a list of authorities to make one’s point. Apparently Jesus addressed the issues in terms of his own understanding.

³ tn Or “their scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

⁴ tn Grk “they were amazed; they marveled.”

⁵ tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

⁶ sn There was wonder (all who heard…were astonished) that Jesus at such a young age could engage in such a discussion. The fact that this story is told of a preteen hints that Jesus was someone special.
