Joshua 1:7

1:7 Make sure you are 1  very strong and brave! Carefully obey 2  all the law my servant Moses charged you to keep! 3  Do not swerve from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful 4  in all you do. 5

6:15 On the seventh day they were up at the crack of dawn 6  and marched around the city as before – only this time they marched around it seven times. 7

Joshua 11:14

11:14 The Israelites plundered all the goods of these cities and the cattle, but they totally destroyed all the people 10  and allowed no one who breathed to live.

13:6 I will drive out before the Israelites all who live in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, 11  all the Sidonians; you be sure to parcel it out to Israel as I instructed you.” 12 

Joshua 22:5

22:5 But carefully obey the commands and instructions Moses the Lord’s servant gave you. Love 13  the Lord your God, follow all his instructions, 14  obey 15  his commands, be loyal to him, 16  and serve him with all your heart and being!” 17

2 tn Heb “so you can be careful to do.” The use of the infinitive לִשְׁמֹר (lishmor, “to keep”) after the imperatives suggests that strength and bravery will be necessary for obedience. Another option is to take the form לִשְׁמֹר as a vocative lamed (ל) with imperative (see Isa 38:20 for an example of this construction), which could be translated, “Indeed, be careful!”

3 tn Heb “commanded you.”

4 tn Heb “be wise,” but the word can mean “be successful” by metonymy.

5 tn Heb “in all which you go.”

6 tn Heb “On the seventh day they rose early, when the dawn ascended.”

7 tn Heb “and they went around the city according to this manner seven times, only on that day they went around the city seven times.”

11 tn Or “dedicated to the Lord.”

12 tn Heb “messengers.”

16 tn Heb “but all the people they struck down with the edge of the sword until they destroyed them.”

21 tn The meaning of the Hebrew name “Misrephoth Maim” is perhaps “lime-kilns by the water” (see HALOT 2:641).
