Leviticus 26:40-45

26:40 However, when ¹  they confess their iniquity and their ancestors’ iniquity which they committed by trespassing against me, ²  by which they also walked ³  in hostility against me ⁴  26:41 (and I myself will walk in hostility against them and bring them into the land of their enemies), and ⁵  then their uncircumcised hearts become humbled and they make up for ⁶  their iniquity, 26:42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, ⁷  and I will remember the land. 26:43 The land will be abandoned by them ⁸  in order that it may make up for ⁹  its Sabbaths while it is made desolate ¹⁰  without them, ¹¹  and they will make up for their iniquity because ¹²  they have rejected my regulations and have abhorred ¹³  my statutes. 26:44 In spite of this, however, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them and abhor them to make a complete end of them, to break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. 26:45 I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors ¹⁴  whom I brought out from the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”

Deuteronomy 4:29-30

4:29 But if you seek the Lord your God from there, you will find him, if, indeed, you seek him with all your heart and soul. ¹⁵  4:30 In your distress when all these things happen to you in the latter days, ¹⁶  if you return to the Lord your God and obey him ¹⁷

30:1 “When you have experienced all these things, both the blessings and the curses ¹⁸  I have set before you, you will reflect upon them ¹⁹  in all the nations where the Lord your God has banished you. 30:2 Then if you and your descendants ²⁰  turn to the Lord your God and obey him with your whole mind and being ²¹  just as ²²  I am commanding you today, 30:3 the Lord your God will reverse your captivity and have pity on you. He will turn and gather you from all the peoples among whom he ²³  has scattered you.

Luke 15:17

¹ tn Heb “And.” Many English versions take this to be a conditional clause (“if…”) though there is no conditional particle (see, e.g., NASB, NIV, NRSV; but see the very different rendering in B. A. Levine, Leviticus [JPSTC], 190). The temporal translation offered here (“when”) takes into account the particle אָז (’az, “then”), which occurs twice in v. 41. The obvious contextual contrast between vv. 39 and 40 is expressed by “however” in the translation.
