Luke 14:26

14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate ¹  his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, ²  he cannot be my disciple.

Acts 4:17-19

4:17 But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more ³  to anyone in this name.” 4:18 And they called them in and ordered ⁴  them not to speak or teach at all in the name ⁵  of Jesus. 4:19 But Peter and John replied, ⁶  “Whether it is right before God to obey ⁷  you rather than God, you decide,

¹ tn This figurative use operates on a relative scale. God is to be loved more than family or self.

² tn Grk “his own soul,” but ψυχή (yuch) is frequently used of one’s physical life. It clearly has that meaning in this context.

³ tn Or “speak no longer.”

⁴ tn Or “commanded.”

⁵ sn In the name of Jesus. Once again, the “name” reflects the person. The person of Jesus and his authority is the “troubling” topic that, as far as the Jewish leadership is concerned, needs controlling.

⁶ tn Grk “answered and said to them.”

⁷ tn Grk “hear,” but the idea of “hear and obey” or simply “obey” is frequently contained in the Greek verb ἀκούω (akouw; see L&N 36.14).
