1:53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and has sent the rich away empty.

Luke 5:31

5:31 Jesus answered them, “Those who are well don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do.

Hebrews 4:16

4:16 Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.

sn Good things refers not merely to material blessings, but blessings that come from knowing God.

sn Another fundamental contrast of Luke’s is between the hungry and the rich (Luke 6:20-26).

tn Grk “And Jesus.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

sn Jesus’ point is that he associates with those who are sick because they have the need and will respond to the offer of help. A person who is well (or who thinks mistakenly that he is) will not seek treatment.

tn Grk “for timely help.”
