Luke 13:16

13:16 Then shouldn’t this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be released from this imprisonment on the Sabbath day?”

Romans 4:11-12

4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised, so that he would become the father of all those who believe but have never been circumcised, that they too could have righteousness credited to them. 4:12 And he is also the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised, but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham possessed when he was still uncircumcised. 10

Romans 4:16

4:16 For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace, 11  with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants – not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham, 12  who is the father of us all

Galatians 3:7

3:7 so then, understand 13  that those who believe are the sons of Abraham. 14

Galatians 3:14

3:14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, 15  so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

Galatians 3:29

3:29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, 16  heirs according to the promise.

tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to show the connection with Jesus’ previous statement.

tn Grk “is it not necessary that.” Jesus argues that no other day is more appropriate to heal a descendant of Abraham than the Sabbath, the exact opposite view of the synagogue leader.

sn Note that this is again a battle between Satan and God; see 11:18-23.

tn The word “long” reflects the emphasis added in the Greek text by ἰδού (idou). See BDAG 468 s.v. 1.

tn Or “bondage”; Grk “bond.”

tn Grk “of the faith, the one [existing] in uncircumcision.”

tn Grk “that he might be,” giving the purpose of v. 11a.

tn Grk “through uncircumcision.”

tn Grk “the father of circumcision.”

10 tn Grk “the ‘in-uncircumcision faith’ of our father Abraham.”

11 tn Grk “that it might be according to grace.”

12 tn Grk “those who are of the faith of Abraham.”

13 tn Grk “know.”

14 tn The phrase “sons of Abraham” is used here in a figurative sense to describe people who are connected to a personality, Abraham, by close nonmaterial ties. It is this personality that has defined the relationship and its characteristics (BDAG 1024-25 s.v. υἱός 2.c.α).

15 tn Or “so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus.”

16 tn Grk “seed.” See the note on the first occurrence of the word “descendant” in 3:16.
