¹ sn The call to be alert at all times is a call to remain faithful in looking for the Lord’s return.

³ sn That is, considered worthy by God. They “gloried in their shame” of honoring Jesus with their testimony (Luke 6:22-23; 2 Macc 6:30).

⁴ sn The name refers to the name of Jesus (cf. 3 John 7).

⁵ tn Grk “And he.” Because of the length of the Greek sentence and the tendency of contemporary English style to use shorter sentences, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

⁶ tn The participle ἐνέγκας (enenka") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

⁷ tn In the Greek text v. 5 is a continuation of the previous sentence, which is long and complicated. In keeping with the tendency of contemporary English to use shorter sentences, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

⁹ tn Grk “a few names”; here ὄνομα (onoma) is used by figurative extension to mean “person” or “people”; according to L&N 9.19 there is “the possible implication of existence or relevance as individuals.”

¹⁰ tn Or “soiled” (so NAB, NRSV, NIV); NCV “have kept their clothes unstained”; CEV “have not dirtied your clothes with sin.”

¹¹ tn The word “dressed” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.
