Luke 4:17

4:17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He ¹  unrolled ²  the scroll and found the place where it was written,

Luke 16:28

16:28 (for I have five brothers) to warn ³  them so that they don’t come ⁴  into this place of torment.’

Luke 23:33

23:33 So ⁵  when they came to the place that is called “The Skull,” ⁶  they crucified ⁷  him there, along with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

¹ tn Grk “And unrolling the scroll he found.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style. Instead a new sentence has been started in the translation.

² tn Grk “opening,” but a scroll of this period would have to be unrolled. The participle ἀναπτύξας (anaptuxa") has been translated as a finite verb due to the requirements of contemporary English style.

³ sn To warn them. The warning would consist of a call to act differently than their dead brother had, or else meet his current terrible fate.

⁴ tn Grk “lest they also come.”

⁵ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the conclusion of the preceding material.

⁶ sn The place that is called ‘The Skull’ (known as Golgotha in Aramaic, cf. John 19:17) is north and just outside of Jerusalem. The hill on which it is located protruded much like a skull, giving the place its name. The Latin word for Greek κρανίον (kranion) is calvaria, from which the English word “Calvary” derives (cf. Luke 23:33 in the KJV).
