5:37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. ¹  If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.

Luke 21:9

21:9 And when you hear of wars and rebellions, ²  do not be afraid. ³  For these things must happen first, but the end will not come at once.” ⁴ 

Luke 24:5

24:5 The ⁵  women ⁶  were terribly frightened ⁷  and bowed ⁸  their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living ⁹  among the dead?

¹ sn Wineskins were bags made of skin or leather, used for storing wine in NT times. As the new wine fermented and expanded, it would stretch the new wineskins. Putting new (unfermented) wine in old wineskins, which had already been stretched, would result in the bursting of the wineskins.

² tn Social and political chaos also precedes the end. This term refers to revolutions (L&N 39.34).

³ tn This is not the usual term for fear, but refers to a deep sense of terror and emotional distress (Luke 24:37; BDAG 895 s.v. πτοέω).

⁴ sn The end will not come at once. This remark about timing not only indicates that there will be events before the end, but that some time will also pass before it comes.

⁴ tn Grk “they”; the referent (the women) has been specified in the translation for clarity (the same has been done in v. 8).

⁵ tn Or “They were extremely afraid.”

⁶ sn Bowed their faces to the ground. Such respect for angels is common: Dan 7:28; 10:9, 15.

⁷ sn By referring to Jesus as the living, the angels make it clear that he is alive. There should be no surprise.
