Luke 7:42

7:42 When they could not pay, he canceled ¹  the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

Luke 7:21

7:21 At that very time ²  Jesus ³  cured many people of diseases, sicknesses, ⁴  and evil spirits, and granted ⁵  sight to many who were blind.

Luke 7:43

7:43 Simon answered, ⁶  “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.” ⁷  Jesus ⁸  said to him, “You have judged rightly.”

¹ tn The verb ἐχαρίσατο (ecarisato) could be translated as “forgave.” Of course this pictures the forgiveness of God’s grace, which is not earned but bestowed with faith (see v. 49).

² tn Grk “In that hour.”

³ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

⁴ tn Grk “and sicknesses,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

⁵ tn Or “and bestowed (sight) on.”

³ tn Grk “answering, said.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified to “answered.”

⁴ tn Grk “the one to whom he forgave more” (see v. 42).
