2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus ¹  was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, ²  he was afraid to go there. After being warned in a dream, he went to the regions of Galilee.

18:12 What do you think? If someone ⁸  owns a hundred ⁹  sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go look for the one that went astray? ¹⁰ 

¹ sn Archelaus took after his father Herod the Great in terms of cruelty and ruthlessness, so Joseph was afraid to go there. After further direction in a dream, he went instead to Galilee.

³ sn The term translated room refers to the inner room of a house, normally without any windows opening outside, the most private location possible (BDAG 988 s.v. ταμεῖον 2).

⁶ tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate a conclusion and transition in the narrative.

⁹ tn Grk “a certain man.” The Greek word ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo") is used here in a somewhat generic sense.

¹⁰ sn This individual with a hundred sheep is a shepherd of modest means, as flocks often had up to two hundred head of sheep.
