Matthew 21:3

21:3 If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ ¹  and he will send them at once.”

Matthew 25:40-41

25:40 And the king will answer them, ²  ‘I tell you the truth, ³  just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters ⁴  of mine, you did it for me.’

25:41 “Then he will say ⁵  to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels!

Matthew 26:75

26:75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. ⁶ 

¹ sn The custom called angaria allowed the impressment of animals for service to a significant figure.

² tn Grk “answering, the king will say to them.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

³ tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

⁴ tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited). In this context Jesus is ultimately speaking of his “followers” (whether men or women, adults or children), but the familial connotation of “brothers and sisters” is also important to retain here.

³ tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

⁴ sn When Peter went out and wept bitterly it shows he really did not want to fail here and was deeply grieved that he had.
