Numbers 21:3

21:3 The Lord listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of the place was called Hormah.

Joshua 23:15-16

23:15 But in the same way every faithful promise the Lord your God made to you has been realized, it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the Lord will bring on you every judgment until he destroys you from this good land which the Lord your God gave you. 23:16 If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”

tc Smr, Greek, and Syriac add “into his hand.”

tn In the Hebrew text the verb has no expressed subject, and so here too is made passive. The name “Hormah” is etymologically connected to the verb “utterly destroy,” forming the popular etymology (or paronomasia, a phonetic wordplay capturing the significance of the event).

tn Heb “and it will be as every good word which the Lord your God spoke to you has come to pass.”

tn Heb “so the Lord will bring every injurious [or “evil”] word [or “thing”] upon you.”

tn Heb “when you violate the covenant of the Lord your God which he commanded you.”

tn Heb “and you walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

tn Or “perish.”
