Psalm 13

For the music director; a psalm of David.

13:1 How long, Lord, will you continue to ignore me?

How long will you pay no attention to me?

13:2 How long must I worry,

and suffer in broad daylight?

How long will my enemy gloat over me?

Psalms 79:4-5

79:4 We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors;

those who live on our borders taunt and insult us.

79:5 How long will this go on, O Lord?

Will you stay angry forever?

How long will your rage burn like fire?

Psalms 89:46

89:46 How long, O Lord, will this last?

Will you remain hidden forever? 10 

Will your anger continue to burn like fire?

and of how I must bear so many insults from people! 13

sn Psalm 13. The psalmist, who is close to death, desperately pleads for God’s deliverance and affirms his trust in God’s faithfulness.

tn Heb “will you forget me continually.”

tn Heb “be exalted over me.” Perhaps one could translate, “How long will my enemy defeat me?”

11 tc Many medieval Hebrew mss read here יְהוָה (yehvah, “the Lord”).

12 tn Heb “remember, O Lord, the taunt against your servants.” Many medieval Hebrew mss read the singular here, “your servant” (that is, the psalmist).

13 tn Heb “my lifting up in my arms [or “against my chest”] all of the many, peoples.” The term רַבִּים (rabbim, “many”) makes no apparent sense here. For this reason some emend the text to רִבֵי (rivey, “attacks by”), a defectively written plural construct form of רִיב (riv, “dispute; quarrel”).

14 tn Heb “[by] which your enemies, O Lord, taunt, [by] which they taunt [at] the heels of your anointed one.”

15 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

16 tn Grk “voice, saying”; the participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated here.

17 tn The expression ἕως πότε (ews pote) was translated “how long.” Cf. BDAG 423 s.v. ἕως 1.b.γ.

18 tn The Greek term here is δεσπότης (despoths; see L&N 37.63).
