they speak arrogantly. 2
119:70 Their hearts are calloused, 3
but I find delight in your law.
15:27 Because he covered his face with fat, 4
and made 5 his hips bulge with fat, 6
3:9 The look on their faces 7 testifies to their guilt; 8
like the people of Sodom they openly boast of their sin. 9
Too bad for them! 10
For they bring disaster on themselves.
5:28 That is how 11 they have grown fat and sleek. 12
There is no limit to the evil things they do. 13
They do not plead the cause of the fatherless in such a way as to win it.
They do not defend the rights of the poor.
16:49 “‘See here – this was the iniquity 14 of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had majesty, abundance of food, and enjoyed carefree ease, but they did not help 15 the poor and needy.
1 tn Heb “their fat they close.” The Hebrew term חֵלֶב (khelev, “fat”) appears to stand by metonymy for their calloused hearts. They attack the psalmist without feeling any pity or remorse. Some propose emending the text to חֵלֶב לִבָּמוֹ (khelev libbamo, “fat of their heart[s]; cf. Ps 119:70, “their heart is insensitive like fat”). This assumes haplography of the לב (lamed-bet) consonantal sequence.
2 tn Heb “[with] their mouth they speak with arrogance.”
3 tn Heb “their heart is insensitive like fat.”
4 sn This verse tells us that he is not in any condition to fight, because he is bloated and fat from luxurious living.
5 tn D. W. Thomas defends a meaning “cover” for the verb עָשָׂה (’asah). See “Translating Hebrew `asah,” BT 17 [1966]: 190-93.
6 tn The term פִּימָה (pimah), a hapax legomenon, is explained by the Arabic fa’ima, “to be fat.” Pope renders this “blubber.” Cf. KJV “and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.”
7 sn This refers to their proud, arrogant demeanor.
8 tn Heb “answers against them”; NRSV “bears witness against them.”
9 tn Heb “their sin, like Sodom, they declare, they do not conceal [it].”
10 tn Heb “woe to their soul.”
11 tn These words are not in the text but are supplied in the translation to show that this line is parallel with the preceding.
12 tn The meaning of this word is uncertain. This verb occurs only here. The lexicons generally relate it to the word translated “plate” in Song 5:14 and understand it to mean “smooth, shiny” (so BDB 799 s.v. I עֶשֶׁת) or “fat” (so HALOT 850 s.v. II עֶשֶׁת). The word in Song 5:14 more likely means “smooth” than “plate” (so TEV). So “sleek” is most likely here.
13 tn Heb “they cross over/transgress with respect to matters of evil.”
14 tn Or “guilt.”
15 tn Heb “strengthen the hand of.”
