Psalm 19

For the music director; a psalm of David.

19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God;

the sky displays his handiwork.

Psalms 19:6

19:6 It emerges from the distant horizon,

and goes from one end of the sky to the other;

nothing can escape its heat.

Psalms 57:5

57:5 Rise up above the sky, O God!

May your splendor cover the whole earth!

Psalms 79:2

79:2 They have given the corpses of your servants

to the birds of the sky;

the flesh of your loyal followers

to the beasts of the earth.

148:1 Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the sky!

Praise him in the heavens!


sn Psalm 19. The psalmist praises God for his self-revelation in the heavens and in the Mosaic law. The psalmist concludes with a prayer, asking the Lord to keep him from sinning and to approve of his thoughts and words.

sn God’s glory refers here to his royal majesty and power.

tn Heb “and the work of his hands the sky declares.” The participles emphasize the ongoing testimony of the heavens/sky.

tn Heb “from the end of the heavens [is] its going forth.”

tn Heb “and its circuit [is] to their ends.”

tn Heb “is hidden from.”

tn Or “be exalted.”

tn Heb “over all the earth [be] your splendor.” Though no verb appears, the tone of the statement is a prayer or wish. (Note the imperative form in the preceding line.)

10 tn Heb “[as] food for the birds of the sky.”

13 sn Psalm 148. The psalmist calls upon all creation to praise the Lord, for he is the creator and sovereign king of the world.
