Psalms 22:22-25

22:22 I will declare your name to my countrymen!

In the middle of the assembly I will praise you!

22:23 You loyal followers of the Lord, praise him!

All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!

All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him!

22:24 For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed;

he did not ignore him;

when he cried out to him, he responded.

22:25 You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly;

I will fulfill my promises before the Lord’s loyal followers.

I spoke about your reliability and deliverance;

I have not neglected to tell the great assembly about your loyal love and faithfulness. 16

Psalms 69:30-34

69:30 I will sing praises to God’s name! 17

I will magnify him as I give him thanks! 18

69:31 That will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull

with horns and hooves.

69:32 The oppressed look on – let them rejoice!

You who seek God, 19  may you be encouraged! 20

Hebrews 2:12

2:12 saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers; 23  in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.” 24

tn Or “brothers,” but here the term does not carry a literal familial sense. It refers to the psalmist’s fellow members of the Israelite covenant community (see v. 23).

tn Heb “[you] fearers of the Lord.” See Ps 15:4.

tn Heb “fear him.”

tn Or “affliction”; or “need.”

sn In this verse the psalmist refers to himself in the third person and characterizes himself as oppressed.

tn Heb “he did not hide his face from him.” For other uses of the idiom “hide the face” meaning “ignore,” see Pss 10:11; 13:1; 51:9. Sometimes the idiom carries the stronger idea of “reject” (see Pss 27:9; 88:14).

tn Heb “heard.”

tn Heb “from with you [is] my praise.”

tn Heb “my vows I will fulfill before those who fear him.” When asking the Lord for help, the psalmists would typically promise to praise the Lord publicly if he intervened and delivered them.

10 tn Heb “his righteousness.” Here the noun צִדָקָה (tsidaqah) refers to the Lord’s saving deeds whereby he vindicates the oppressed.

11 tn Heb “to a people [to be] born that he has acted.” The words “they will tell” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

12 sn The great assembly is also mentioned in Pss 22:25 and 35:18.

13 tn Heb “I proclaim justice in the great assembly.” Though “justice” appears without a pronoun here, the Lord’s just acts are in view (see v. 10). His “justice” (צֶדֶק, tsedeq) is here the deliverance that originates in his justice; he protects and vindicates the one whose cause is just.

14 tn Heb “Look! My lips I do not restrain.”

15 tn Heb “your justice I have not hidden in the midst of my heart.”

16 tn Heb “I have not hidden your loyal love and reliability.”

17 tn Heb “I will praise the name of God with a song.”

18 tn Heb “I will magnify him with thanks.”

19 sn You who seek God refers to those who seek to have a relationship with God by obeying and worshiping him (see Ps 53:2).

20 tn Heb “may your heart[s] live.” See Ps 22:26.

21 tn Heb “his prisoners he does not despise.”

22 sn Psalm 111. The psalmist praises God for his marvelous deeds, especially the way in which he provides for and delivers his people. The psalm is an acrostic. After the introductory call to praise, every poetic line (twenty-two in all) begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

23 tn Here, because of its occurrence in an OT quotation, τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς (tois adelfois) has been translated simply as “brothers” rather than “brothers and sisters” (see the note on the latter phrase in the previous verse).

24 sn A quotation from Ps 22:22.
