Psalms 71:17-19

71:17 O God, you have taught me since I was young,

and I am still declaring your amazing deeds.

71:18 Even when I am old and gray,

O God, do not abandon me,

until I tell the next generation about your strength,

and those coming after me about your power.

71:19 Your justice, O God, extends to the skies above;

you have done great things.

O God, who can compare to you?

Psalms 72:18

72:18 The Lord God, the God of Israel, deserves praise!

Psalms 105:2

Make music to him!

Tell about all his miraculous deeds!

Psalms 119:27

119:27 Help me to understand what your precepts mean!

Then I can meditate 10  on your marvelous teachings. 11

Psalms 136:4-5

136:4 to the one who performs magnificent, amazing deeds all by himself,

for his loyal love endures,

136:5 to the one who used wisdom to make the heavens,

for his loyal love endures,

Psalms 145:5

145:5 I will focus on your honor and majestic splendor,

and your amazing deeds! 12

Luke 19:37-40

19:37 As he approached the road leading down from 13  the Mount of Olives, 14  the whole crowd of his 15  disciples began to rejoice 16  and praise 17  God with a loud voice for all the mighty works 18  they had seen: 19  19:38Blessed is the king 20  who comes in the name of the Lord! 21  Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 19:39 But 22  some of the Pharisees 23  in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 24  19:40 He answered, 25  “I tell you, if they 26  keep silent, the very stones 27  will cry out!”

tn Heb “and until now I am declaring.”

tn Heb “and even unto old age and gray hair.”

tn Heb “until I declare your arm to a generation, to everyone who comes your power.” God’s “arm” here is an anthropomorphism that symbolizes his great strength.

tn Heb “your justice, O God, [is] unto the height.” The Hebrew term מָרוֹם (marom, “height”) is here a title for the sky/heavens.

tn Heb “you who have done great things.”

tn Or “Who is like you?”

tn Heb “[be] blessed.” See Pss 18:46; 28:6; 31:21; 41:13.

tn Heb “[the] one who does amazing things by himself.”

tn Heb “the way of your precepts make me understand.”

10 tn The cohortative with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.

11 tn Heb “your amazing things,” which refers here to the teachings of the law (see v. 18).

12 tn Heb “the splendor of the glory of your majesty, and the matters of your amazing deeds I will ponder.”

13 tn Grk “the descent of”; this could refer to either the slope of the hillside itself or the path leading down from it (the second option has been adopted for the translation, see L&N 15.109).

14 sn See the note on the name Mount of Olives in v. 29.

15 tn Grk “the”; the Greek article has been translated here as a possessive pronoun (ExSyn 215).

16 tn Here the participle χαίροντες (caironte") has been translated as a finite verb in English; it could also be translated adverbially as a participle of manner: “began to praise God joyfully.”

17 sn See 2:13, 20; Acts 2:47; 3:8-9.

18 tn Or “works of power,” “miracles.” Jesus’ ministry of miracles is what has drawn attention. See Luke 7:22.

19 tn Grk “they had seen, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

20 sn Luke adds the title king to the citation from Ps 118:26 to make clear who was meant (see Luke 18:38). The psalm was used in looking for the deliverance of the end, thus leading to the Pharisees’ reaction.

21 sn A quotation from Ps 118:26.

22 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context. Not all present are willing to join in the acclamation.

23 sn See the note on Pharisees in 5:17.

24 sn Teacher, rebuke your disciples. The Pharisees were complaining that the claims were too great.

25 tn Grk “and answering, he said.” This has been simplified in the translation to “He answered.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

26 tn Grk “these.”

27 sn This statement amounts to a rebuke. The idiom of creation speaking means that even creation knows what is taking place, yet the Pharisees miss it. On this idiom, see Gen 4:10 and Hab 2:11.
