Revelation 8:10-12

8:10 Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a huge star burning like a torch fell from the sky; it landed on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 8:11 (Now the name of the star is Wormwood.) So a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from these waters because they were poisoned.

8:12 Then 10  the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. And there was no light for a third of the day 11  and for a third of the night likewise.

Revelation 9:1

9:1 Then 12  the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky 13  to the earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. 14

Ezekiel 32:7

32:7 When I extinguish you, I will cover the sky;

I will darken its stars.

I will cover the sun with a cloud,

and the moon will not shine. 15

Daniel 8:10

8:10 It grew so big it reached the army 16  of heaven, and it brought about the fall of some of the army and some of the stars 17  to the ground, where it trampled them.

Luke 21:25

The Arrival of the Son of Man

21:25 “And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, 18  and on the earth nations will be in distress, 19  anxious 20  over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves.

tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

tn Or “from heaven” (the same Greek word means both “heaven” and “sky”).

tn Grk “fell.”

tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” in keeping with the parenthetical nature of this remark.

tn Grk “is called,” but this is somewhat redundant in contemporary English.

sn Wormwood refers to a particularly bitter herb with medicinal value. According to L&N 3.21, “The English term wormwood is derived from the use of the plant as a medicine to kill intestinal worms.” This remark about the star’s name is parenthetical in nature.

tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the star falling on the waters.

tn That is, terribly bitter (see the note on “Wormwood” earlier in this verse).

tn Grk “and many of the men died from these waters because they were bitter.”

10 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

11 tn Grk “the day did not shine [with respect to] the third of it.”

12 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

13 tn Or “from heaven” (the same Greek word means both “heaven” and “sky”).

14 tn On this term BDAG 2 s.v. ἄβυσσος 2 states, “netherworld, abyss, esp. the abode of the dead Ro 10:7 (Ps 106:26) and of demons Lk 8:31; dungeon where the devil is kept Rv 20:3; abode of the θηρίον, the Antichrist 11:7; 17:8; of ᾿Αβαδδών (q.v.), the angel of the underworld 9:11…φρέαρ τῆς ἀ. 9:1f; capable of being sealed 9:1; 20:1, 3.”

15 tn Heb “will not shine its light.” For similar features of cosmic eschatology, see Joel 2:10; 4:15; Amos 5:18-20; Zeph 1:5.

16 tn Traditionally, “host.” The term refers to God’s heavenly angelic assembly, which he sometimes leads into battle as an army.

17 sn In prescientific Israelite thinking the stars were associated with the angelic members of God’s heavenly assembly. See Judg 5:20; Job 38:7; Isa 40:26. In west Semitic mythology the stars were members of the high god’s divine assembly (see Isa 14:13).

18 sn Signs in the sun and moon and stars are cosmic signs that turn our attention to the end and the Son of Man’s return for the righteous. OT imagery is present: See Isa 13:9-10; 24:18-20; 34:4; Ezek 32:7-8; Joel 2:1, 30-31; 3:15.

19 tn Grk “distress of nations.”

20 tn Or “in consternation” (L&N 32.9).
