Romans 1:2

1:2 This gospel ¹  he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures,

Romans 4:11

4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised, ²  so that he would become ³  the father of all those who believe but have never been circumcised, ⁴  that they too could have righteousness credited to them.

¹ tn Grk “the gospel of God, which he promised.” Because of the length and complexity of this sentence in Greek, it was divided into shorter English sentences in keeping with contemporary English style. To indicate the referent of the relative pronoun (“which”), the word “gospel” was repeated at the beginning of v. 2.

² tn Grk “of the faith, the one [existing] in uncircumcision.”

³ tn Grk “that he might be,” giving the purpose of v. 11a.

⁴ tn Grk “through uncircumcision.”
