Romans 2:29

2:29 but someone is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart ¹  by the Spirit ²  and not by the written code. ³  This person’s ⁴  praise is not from people but from God.

Romans 3:4

3:4 Absolutely not! Let God be proven true, and every human being ⁵  shown up as a liar, ⁶  just as it is written: “so that you will be justified ⁷  in your words and will prevail when you are judged.” ⁸ 

Romans 3:19

3:19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under ⁹  the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

Romans 8:9

8:9 You, however, are not in ¹⁰  the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to him.

Romans 9:20

9:20 But who indeed are you – a mere human being ¹¹  – to talk back to God? ¹²  Does what is molded say to the molder, “Why have you made me like this?” ¹³

² tn Some have taken the phrase ἐν πνεύματι (en pneumati, “by/in [the] S/spirit”) not as a reference to the Holy Spirit, but referring to circumcision as “spiritual and not literal” (RSV).

⁴ tn Grk “whose.” The relative pronoun has been replaced by the phrase “this person’s” and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started in the translation.

⁶ tn Grk “Let God be true, and every man a liar.” The words “proven” and “shown up” are supplied in the translation to clarify the meaning.
