4:2 Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.
1 tn Grk “and being.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
2 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
3 tn Or “was justified.”
4 tn Grk “pain.” This word appears only three times in the NT outside of this verse (Rev 16:10, 11; 21:4) where the translation “pain” makes sense. For the present verse it has been translated “worked hard.” See BDAG 852 s.v. πόνος 1.
5 tn BDAG 473 s.v. ἱκανόω states, “τινὰ εἴς τι someone for someth. Col 1:12.” The point of the text is that God has qualified the saints for a “share” or “portion” in the inheritance of the saints.
6 tn Grk “the inheritance of the saints.” The genitive noun τῶν ἁγίων (twn Jagiwn) is a possessive genitive: “the saints’ inheritance.”
7 tn Grk “the promises,” referring to the things God promised, not to the pledges themselves.
8 tn Or “sojourners.”
