1 Kings 19:4
19:4 while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrub
and asked the
Lord to take his life:
“I’ve had enough! Now, O
Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”
Job 3:20-22
Longing for Death
3:20 “Why does God give light to one who is in misery,
and life to those whose soul is bitter,
3:21 to those who wait for death that does not come,
and search for it
more than for hidden treasures,
3:22 who rejoice even to jubilation,
and are exultant when they find the grave?
Job 6:8-10
A Cry for Death
6:8 “Oh that my request would be realized,
and that God would grant me what I long for!
6:9 And that God would be willing to crush me,
that he would let loose his hand
and kill me.
6:10 Then I would yet have my comfort,
then I would rejoice,
in spite of pitiless pain,
for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
Job 7:15
7:15 so that I would prefer strangling,
and death more than life.
Jonah 4:3
4:3 So now,
Lord, kill me instead,
because I would rather die than live!”
Jonah 4:8-9
4:8 When the sun began to shine, God sent
a hot
east wind. So the sun beat down
on Jonah’s head, and he grew faint. So he despaired of life,
and said, “I would rather die than live!”
4:9 God said to Jonah, “Are you really so very angry
about the little plant?” And he said, “I am as angry
as I could possibly be!”
Philippians 1:20-24
1:20 My confident hope
is that I will in no way be ashamed
but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.
1:21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.
1:22 Now if I am to go on living in the body,
this will mean productive work
for me, yet I don’t know which I prefer:
1:23 I feel torn between the two,
because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far,
1:24 but it is more vital for your sake that I remain
in the body.
James 1:4
1:4 And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything.
