Luke 13:28-29
13:28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth
when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
and all the prophets in the kingdom of God
but you yourselves thrown out.
13:29 Then
people
will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table
in the kingdom of God.
Luke 16:23-31
16:23 And in hell,
as he was in torment,
he looked up
and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.
16:24 So
he called out,
‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus
to dip the tip of his finger
in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish
in this fire.’
16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Child,
remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.
16:26 Besides all this,
a great chasm
has been fixed between us,
so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’
16:27 So
the rich man
said, ‘Then I beg you, father – send Lazarus
to my father’s house
16:28 (for I have five brothers) to warn
them so that they don’t come
into this place of torment.’
16:29 But Abraham said,
‘They have Moses and the prophets; they must respond to
them.’
16:30 Then
the rich man
said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead
goes to them, they will repent.’
16:31 He
replied to him, ‘If they do not respond to
Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Isaiah 48:1-2
The Lord Appeals to the Exiles
48:1 Listen to this, O family of Jacob,
you who are called by the name ‘Israel,’
and are descended from Judah,
who take oaths in the name of the Lord,
and invoke the God of Israel –
but not in an honest and just manner.
48:2 Indeed, they live in the holy city;
they trust in the God of Israel,
whose name is the Lord who commands armies.
Jeremiah 7:4-10
7:4 Stop putting your confidence in the false belief that says,
“We are safe!
The temple of the
Lord is here! The temple of the
Lord is here! The temple of the
Lord is here!”
7:5 You must change
the way you have been living and do what is right. You must treat one another fairly.
7:6 Stop oppressing foreigners who live in your land, children who have lost their fathers, and women who have lost their husbands.
Stop killing innocent people
in this land. Stop paying allegiance to
other gods. That will only bring about your ruin.
7:7 If you stop doing these things,
I will allow you to continue to live in this land
which I gave to your ancestors as a lasting possession.
7:8 “‘But just look at you! You are putting your confidence in a false belief that will not deliver you.
7:9 You steal. You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to other gods whom you have not previously known.
7:10 Then you come and stand in my presence in this temple I have claimed as my own and say, “We are safe!” You think you are so safe that you go on doing all those hateful sins!
John 8:33
8:33 “We are descendants
of Abraham,” they replied,
“and have never been anyone’s slaves! How can you say,
‘You will become free’?”
Romans 4:16
4:16 For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace,
with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants – not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham,
who is the father of us all
Romans 9:7
9:7 nor are all the children Abraham’s true descendants; rather “
through Isaac will your descendants be counted.”
