Luke 14:26-33
14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate
his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
14:27 Whoever does not carry his own cross
and follow
me cannot be my disciple.
14:28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit down
first and compute the cost
to see if he has enough money to complete it?
14:29 Otherwise,
when he has laid
a foundation and is not able to finish the tower,
all who see it
will begin to make fun of
him.
14:30 They will say,
‘This man
began to build and was not able to finish!’
14:31 Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit down
first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose
the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
14:32 If he cannot succeed,
he will send a representative
while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.
14:33 In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.
Luke 18:22-23
18:22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have
and give the money
to the poor,
and you will have treasure
in heaven. Then
come, follow me.”
18:23 But when the man
heard this he became very sad,
for he was extremely wealthy.
Joshua 24:19-22
24:19 Joshua warned the people, “You will not keep worshiping the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God who will not forgive your rebellion or your sins.
24:20 If you abandon the Lord and worship foreign gods, he will turn against you; he will bring disaster on you and destroy you, though he once treated you well.”
24:21 The people said to Joshua, “No! We really will worship the Lord!”
24:22 Joshua said to the people, “Do you agree to be witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to worship the Lord?” They replied, “We are witnesses!”
John 6:60-66
6:60 Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things,
said, “This is a difficult
saying!
Who can understand it?”
6:61 When Jesus was aware
that his disciples were complaining
about this, he said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended?
6:62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?
6:63 The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help!
The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
6:64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
6:65 So Jesus added,
“Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”
Peter’s Confession
6:66 After this many of his disciples quit following him and did not accompany him any longer.
