14:5 But the Lord had told Ahijah, “Look, Jeroboam’s wife is coming to find out from you what will happen to her son, for he is sick. Tell her so-and-so. 3  When she comes, she will be in a disguise.”

Ezekiel 14:3-5

14:3 “Son of man, these men have erected their idols in their hearts and placed the obstacle leading to their iniquity 4  right before their faces. Should I really allow them to seek 5  me? 14:4 Therefore speak to them and say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: When any one from the house of Israel erects his idols in his heart and sets the obstacle leading to his iniquity before his face, and then consults a prophet, I the Lord am determined to answer him personally according to the enormity of his idolatry. 6  14:5 I will do this in order to capture the hearts of the house of Israel, who have alienated themselves from me on account of all their idols.’

[14:2]  1 tn Heb “Get up, change yourself.”

[14:2]  2 tn Heb “look, Ahijah the prophet is there, he told me [I would be] king over this nation.”

[14:5]  3 sn Tell her so-and-so. Certainly the Lord gave Ahijah a specific message to give to Jeroboam’s wife (see vv. 6-16), but the author of Kings here condenses the Lord’s message with the words “so-and-so.” For dramatic effect he prefers to have us hear the message from Ahijah’s lips as he speaks to the king’s wife.

[14:3]  4 tn Heb “the stumbling block of their iniquity.” This phrase is unique to the prophet Ezekiel.

[14:3]  5 tn Or “I will not reveal myself to them.” The Hebrew word is used in a technical sense here of seeking an oracle from a prophet (2 Kgs 1:16; 3:11; 8:8).

[14:4]  6 tn Heb “in accordance with the multitude of his idols.”

[14:8]  7 tn Heb “proverbs.”

[20:20]  8 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[5:4]  23 tn The negative interrogative particle οὐχί (ouci) expects a positive reply to this question and the following one (“And when it was sold, was it not at your disposal?”).

[5:10]  28 tn Grk “And at once.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.
