[17:1]  3 tn Heb “before whom I stand.”

[17:1]  4 tn Heb “except at the command of my word.”

[14:1]  5 tc Some mss of the Old Greek lack vv. 1-20.

[14:1]  6 tc Some mss of the Old Greek lack vv. 1-20.

[20:21]  7 tn Heb “struck down Aram with a great striking down.”

[1:10]  8 tn Or “bodyguard” (Heb “mighty men”).

[1:2]  9 tn Heb “said to.”

[1:2]  10 tn Heb “let them seek for my master, the king, a young girl, a virgin.” The third person plural subject of the verb is indefinite (see GKC 460 §144.f). The appositional expression, “a young girl, a virgin,” is idiomatic; the second term specifically defines the more general first term (see IBHS 230 §12.3b).

[1:2]  11 tn Heb “and she will stand before the king.” The Hebrew phrase “stand before” can mean “to attend; to serve” (BDB 764 s.v. עָמַד).

[1:2]  12 tn Heb “and she will lie down in your bosom.” The expression might imply sexual intimacy (see 2 Sam 12:3 [where the lamb symbolizes Bathsheba] and Mic 7:5), though v. 4b indicates that David did not actually have sex with the young woman.

[1:2]  13 tn Heb “and my master, the king, will be warm.”

[15:21]  14 tn Heb “building.”

[4:2]  15 tn Heb “If you [= you must, see the translator’s note on the word “do” later in this verse] swear/take an oath, ‘As the Lord lives,’ in truth, justice, and righteousness…”

[4:2]  16 tn 4:1-2a consists of a number of “if” clauses, two of which are formally introduced by the Hebrew particle אִם (’im) while the others are introduced by the conjunction “and,” followed by a conjunction (“and” = “then”) with a perfect in 4:2b which introduces the consequence. The translation “You must…. If you do,” was chosen to avoid a long and complicated sentence.

[4:2]  17 tn Heb “bless themselves in him and make their boasts in him.”

[5:2]  18 tn Heb “Though they say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives.” The idea of “swear on oath” comes from the second line.

[5:2]  19 tc The translation follows many Hebrew mss and the Syriac version in reading “surely” (אָכֵן, ’akhen) instead of “therefore” (לָכֵן, lakhen) in the MT.

[5:2]  20 tn Heb “they swear falsely.”
