1 Samuel 14:20

Context

14:20 Saul and all the army that was with him assembled and marched into battle, where they found 1  the Philistines in total panic killing one another with their swords. 2

Psalms 80:4-16

Context

80:4 O Lord God, invincible warrior! 3

How long will you remain angry at your people while they pray to you? 4

80:5 You have given them tears as food; 5

you have made them drink tears by the measure. 6

80:6 You have made our neighbors dislike us, 7

and our enemies insult us.

80:7 O God, invincible warrior, 8  restore us!

Smile on us! 9  Then we will be delivered! 10

80:8 You uprooted a vine 11  from Egypt;

you drove out nations and transplanted it.

80:9 You cleared the ground for it; 12

it took root, 13

and filled the land.

80:10 The mountains were covered by its shadow,

the highest cedars 14  by its branches.

80:11 Its branches reached the Mediterranean Sea, 15

and its shoots the Euphrates River. 16

80:12 Why did you break down its walls, 17

so that all who pass by pluck its fruit? 18

80:13 The wild boars of the forest ruin it; 19

the insects 20  of the field feed on it.

80:14 O God, invincible warrior, 21  come back!

Look down from heaven and take notice!

Take care of this vine,

80:15 the root 22  your right hand planted,

the shoot you made to grow! 23

80:16 It is burned 24  and cut down.

They die because you are displeased with them. 25

Isaiah 28:19

Context

28:19 Whenever it sweeps by, it will overtake you;

indeed, 26  every morning it will sweep by,

it will come through during the day and the night.” 27

When this announcement is understood,

it will cause nothing but terror.

Isaiah 30:17

Context

30:17 One thousand will scurry at the battle cry of one enemy soldier; 28

at the battle cry of five enemy soldiers you will all run away, 29

until the remaining few are as isolated 30

as a flagpole on a mountaintop

or a signal flag on a hill.”

Isaiah 51:20

Context

51:20 Your children faint;

they lie at the head of every street

like an antelope in a snare.

They are left in a stupor by the Lord’s anger,

by the battle cry of your God. 31

Isaiah 66:15

Context

66:15 For look, the Lord comes with fire,

his chariots come like a windstorm, 32

to reveal his raging anger,

his battle cry, and his flaming arrows. 33

Zechariah 14:12-13

Context

14:12 But this will be the nature of the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that have fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will decay while they stand on their feet, their eyes will rot away in their sockets, and their tongues will dissolve in their mouths. 14:13 On that day there will be great confusion from the Lord among them; they will seize each other and attack one another violently.

John 3:36

Context
3:36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects 34  the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath 35  remains 36  on him.

[14:20]  1 tn Heb “and look, there was”

[14:20]  2 tn Heb “the sword of a man against his companion, a very great panic.”

[80:4]  3 tn HebLord, God, hosts.” One expects the construct form אֱלֹהֵי (’elohey) before צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot; “hosts”; see Ps 89:9), but יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים (yehvahelohim) precedes צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot) in Pss 59:5 and 84:8 as well. In this context the term “hosts” (meaning “armies”) has been rendered “invincible warrior.”

[80:4]  4 tn Heb “How long will you remain angry during the prayer of your people.” Some take the preposition -בְּ (bet) in an adversative sense here (“at/against the prayer of your people”), but the temporal sense is preferable. The psalmist expects persistent prayer to pacify God.

[80:5]  5 tn Heb “you have fed them the food of tears.”

[80:5]  6 tn Heb “[by] the third part [of a measure].” The Hebrew term שָׁלִישׁ (shalish, “third part [of a measure]”) occurs only here and in Isa 40:12.

[80:6]  7 tn Heb “you have made us an object of contention to our neighbors.”

[80:7]  8 tn Heb “O God, hosts.” One expects the construct form אֱלֹהֵי before צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot, “hosts”; see Ps 89:9), but יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים (yehvahelohim) precedes צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot) in Pss 59:5 and 84:8 as well. See also v. 4 for a similar construction.

[80:7]  9 tn The idiom “cause your face to shine” probably refers to a smile (see Eccl 8:1), which in turn suggests favor and blessing (see Num 6:25; Pss 4:6; 31:16; 44:3; 67:1; 89:15; Dan 9:17).

[80:7]  10 tn Heb “cause your face to shine in order that we may be delivered.” After the imperative, the cohortative with prefixed vav (ו) indicates purpose/result.

[80:8]  11 sn The vine is here a metaphor for Israel (see Ezek 17:6-10; Hos 10:1).

[80:9]  12 tn Heb “you cleared away before it.”

[80:9]  13 tn Heb “and it took root [with] its roots.”

[80:10]  14 tn Heb “cedars of God.” The divine name אֵל (’al, “God”) is here used in an idiomatic manner to indicate the superlative.

[80:11]  15 tn Heb “to [the] sea.” The “sea” refers here to the Mediterranean Sea.

[80:11]  16 tn Heb “to [the] river.” The “river” is the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia. Israel expanded both to the west and to the east.

[80:12]  17 sn The protective walls of the metaphorical vineyard are in view here (see Isa 5:5).

[80:12]  18 tn Heb “pluck it.”

[80:13]  19 tn The Hebrew verb כִּרְסֵם (kirsem, “to eat away; to ruin”) occurs only here in the OT.

[80:13]  20 tn The precise referent of the Hebrew word translated “insects,” which occurs only here and in Ps 50:11, is uncertain. Aramaic, Arabic, and Akkadian cognates refer to insects, such as locusts or crickets.

[80:14]  21 tn Heb “O God, hosts.” One expects the construct form אֱלֹהֵי before צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot, “hosts”; see Ps 89:9), but יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים (yehvahelohim) precedes צְבָאוֹת (tsÿvaot) in Pss 59:5 and 84:8 as well. See also vv. 4, 7 for a similar construction.

[80:15]  22 tn The Hebrew noun occurs only here in the OT. HALOT 483 s.v. III כֵּן emends the form to כַּנָּהּ (kannah, “its shoot”).

[80:15]  23 tn Heb “and upon a son you strengthened for yourself.” In this context, where the extended metaphor of the vine dominates, בֵּן (ben, “son”) probably refers to the shoots that grow from the vine. Cf. Gen 49:22.

[80:16]  24 tn Heb “burned with fire.”

[80:16]  25 tn Heb “because of the rebuke of your face they perish.”

[28:19]  26 tn Or “for” (KJV, ASV, NASB, NRSV).

[28:19]  27 tn The words “it will come through” are supplied in the translation. The verb “will sweep by” does double duty in the parallel structure.

[30:17]  28 tn Heb “One thousand from before [or “because of”] one battle cry.” גְּעָרָה (gÿarah) is often defined as “threat,” but in war contexts it likely refers to a shout or battle cry. See Ps 76:6.

[30:17]  29 tn Heb “from before [or “because of”] the battle cry of five you will flee.

[30:17]  30 tn Heb “until you are left” (so NAB, NASB, NRSV).

[51:20]  31 tn Heb “those who are full of the anger of the Lord, the shout [or “rebuke”] of your God.”

[66:15]  32 sn Chariots are like a windstorm in their swift movement and in the way that they kick up dust.

[66:15]  33 tn Heb “to cause to return with the rage of his anger, and his battle cry [or “rebuke”] with flames of fire.”

[3:36]  34 tn Or “refuses to believe,” or “disobeys.”

[3:36]  35 tn Or “anger because of evil,” or “punishment.”

[3:36]  36 tn Or “resides.”

[3:1]  37 sn See the note on Pharisees in 1:24.

[3:1]  38 tn Grk “a ruler of the Jews” (denoting a member of the Sanhedrin, the highest legal, legislative, and judicial body among the Jews).

[2:16]  39 tn Or (perhaps) “Stop making.”

[2:16]  40 tn Or “a house of merchants” (an allusion to Zech 14:21).
