[15:20]  1 tn Heb “listened to the voice of the Lord.”

[15:20]  2 tn Heb “journey.”

[15:24]  3 tn Heb “the mouth of the Lord.”

[15:24]  4 tn Heb “and your words.”

[15:24]  5 tn Heb “and I listened to their voice.”

[15:1]  6 tn Heb “to the voice of the words of the Lord” (so KJV).

[13:4]  7 tn The words “this message” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[13:4]  8 tn Heb “stinks.” The figurative language indicates that Israel had become repulsive to the Philistines.

[13:4]  9 tn Heb “were summoned after.”

[21:1]  10 tn Heb “trembled to meet.”

[22:8]  11 tn Heb “uncovers my ear.”

[22:2]  12 tn Heb “bitter of soul.”

[22:2]  13 tn Heb “to.”

[1:9]  14 tc The LXX adds “and stood before the Lord,” but this is probably a textual expansion due to the terseness of the statement in the Hebrew text.

[1:9]  15 tn Or perhaps, “on his throne.” See Joüon 2:506-7 §137.f.

[16:10]  16 tn Heb “caused seven of his sons to pass before Samuel.” This could be taken as referring to seven sons in addition to the three mentioned before this, but 1 Sam 17:12 says Jesse had eight sons, not eleven. 1 Chr 2:13-15 lists only seven sons, including David. However, 1 Chr 27:18 mentions an additional son, named Elihu.

[24:21]  17 tn Heb “by the Lord.”

[24:21]  18 tn Heb “cut off.”

[24:22]  19 tn Heb “and David swore an oath to Saul.”

[24:2]  20 tn Heb “to search [for].”

[24:2]  21 tn Heb “upon the face of.”

[24:2]  22 tn Or “the region of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats,” if this expression is understood as a place name (cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV, TEV, CEV).

[14:3]  23 tc ‡ Most witnesses (א2 C D L W Z Θ 0106 Ë1,13 33 Ï lat) read αὐτόν (auton, “him”) here as a way of clarifying the direct object; various important witnesses lack the word, however (א* B 700 pc ff1 h q). The original wording most likely lacked it, but it has been included here due to English style. NA27 includes the word in brackets, indicating reservations about its authenticity.

[14:4]  24 tn The imperfect tense verb is here rendered with an iterative force.

[14:4]  25 sn This marriage of Herod to his brother Philip’s wife was a violation of OT law (Lev 18:16; 20:21). In addition, both Herod Antipas and Herodias had each left marriages to enter into this union.

[14:5]  26 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[14:5]  27 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Herod) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[14:5]  28 tn Grk “him” (also in the following phrase, Grk “accepted him”); in both cases the referent (John) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[14:10]  29 tn Grk “And.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of previous action(s) in the narrative.
