10:4 “Your father made us work too hard! ¹  Now if you lighten the demands he made and don’t make us work as hard, we will serve you.” ²

36:13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him vow allegiance ³  in the name of God. He was stubborn and obstinate, and refused to return ⁴  to the Lord God of Israel.

2 Chronicles 30:8

30:8 Now, don’t be stubborn ⁵  like your fathers! Submit ⁶  to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has permanently consecrated. Serve the Lord your God so that he might relent from his raging anger. ⁷ 

[10:4]  ¹ tn Heb “made our yoke burdensome.”

[10:4]  ² tn Heb “but you, now, lighten the burdensome work of your father and the heavy yoke which he placed on us, and we will serve you.” In the Hebrew text the prefixed verbal form with vav (וְנַעַבְדֶךָ, vÿna’avdekha, “and we will serve you”) following the imperative (הָקֵל, haqel, “lighten”) indicates purpose/result. The conditional sentence used in the present translation is an attempt to bring out the logical relationship between these forms.

[36:13]  ⁴ tn Heb “and he stiffened his neck and strengthened his heart from returning.”

[30:8]  ⁵ tn Heb “don’t stiffen your neck” (a Hebrew idiom for being stubborn).

[30:8]  ⁷ tn Heb “so that the rage of his anger might turn from you.” The jussive with vav conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.
