• [Est 4:16] Come, Humble Sinner

  Come, humble sinner, in whose breast, A thousand thoughts revolve, Come, with your guilt and fear oppressed, And make this last resolve. I’ll go to Jesus, though my sin Like mountains round me close; I know His courts, I’ll enter in, Whatever may oppose. Prostrate I’ll lie before His throne, And there my guilt confess, I’ll tell Him, I’m a wretch undone, Without His sovereign grace. I’ll to the gracious King approach, Whose scepter pardon gives; Perhaps he command my touch, And then the suppliant lives. Perhaps He will admit my plea, Perhaps will hear my prayer; But, if I perish, I will pray, And perish only there. I can but perish if I go; I am resolved to try; But if I stay away, I know I must forever die. But, if I die with mercy sought, When I the King have tried, This were to die (delightful thought!) As sinner never died.

• [Joe 2:12] By Precepts Taught Of Ages Past

  By precepts taught of ages past, Now let us keep again the fast, Which, year by year, in order meet Of forty days is made complete. The law and seers that were of old In divers ways this Lent foretold, Which Christ Himself, the Lord and Guide Of every season, sanctified. More sparing therefore let us make The words we speak, the food we take, Deny ourselves in mirth and sleep, In stricter watch our senses keep. In prayer together let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all; And weep before the Judge, and say, O turn from us Thy wrath away. Thy grace have we offended sore By sins, O God, which we deplore; Pour down upon us from above The riches of Thy pardoning love. Remember, Lord, though frail we be, That yet Thine handiwork are we: Nor let the honor of Thy Name Be by another put to shame. Forgive the ill that we have wrought, Increase the good that we have sought; That we at length, our wanderings o’er, May please Thee now and evermore. Blest Three in One, and One in Three, Almighty God, we pray to Thee, That Thou wouldst now vouchsafe to bless Our fast with fruits of righteousness.

  Good it is to keep the fast, Shadowed forth in ages past, Which our own Almighty Lord Hallowed by His deed and Word. Moses, while he fasted, saw God Who gave by him the law; To Elijah angels came, Steeds of fire and car of flame. So was Daniel meet to gaze On the sight of latter days And the Baptist to proclaim Blessings through the Bridegroom’s Name.   All praise to our redeeming Lord, Who joins us by His grace; And bids us, each to each restored, Together seek His face. He bids us build each other up; And, gathered into one, To our high calling’s glorious hope, We hand in hand go on. The gift which He on one bestows, We all delight to prove; The grace through every vessel flows, In purest streams of love. E’en now we think and speak the same, And cordially agree; Concentered all, through Jesus’ Name, In perfect harmony. We all partake the joy of one; The common peace we feel; A peace to sensual minds unknown, A joy unspeakable.   We rear not a temple, like Judah’s of old, Whose portals were marble, whose vaultings were gold; No incense is lighted, no victims are slain, No monarch kneels praying to hallow the fane. More simple and lowly the walls that we raise, And humbler the pomp of procession and praise, Where the heart is the altar whence incense shall roll, And Messiah the King Who shall pray for the soul. O Father, come in! but not in the cloud Which filled the bright courts where Thy chosen ones bowed; But come in that Spirit of glory and grace, Which beams on the soul and illumines the face. O come in the power of Thy life giving Word, And reveal to each heart its Redeemer and Lord; Till faith bring the peace to the penitent giv’n, And love fill the air with the fragrance of Heav’n. The pomp of Moriah has long passed away, And soon shall our frailer erection decay; But the souls that are builded in worship and love Shall be temples of God, everlasting above.
