2 Chronicles 7:17-22

Context
7:17 You must serve me as your father David did. Do everything I commanded and obey my rules and regulations. 1  7:18 Then I will establish your dynasty, 2  just as I promised your father David, ‘You will not fail to have a successor ruling over Israel.’ 3

7:19 “But if you people 4  ever turn away from me, fail to obey the regulations and rules I instructed you to keep, 5  and decide to serve and worship other gods, 6  7:20 then I will remove you 7  from my land I have given you, 8  I will abandon this temple I have consecrated with my presence, 9  and I will make you 10  an object of mockery and ridicule 11  among all the nations. 7:21 As for this temple, which was once majestic, 12  everyone who passes by it will be shocked and say, ‘Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple?’ 7:22 Others will then answer, 13  ‘Because they abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors, 14  who led them out of Egypt. They embraced other gods whom they worshiped and served. 15  That is why he brought all this disaster down on them.’”

Deuteronomy 28:1-14

Context
The Covenant Blessings

28:1 “If you indeed 16  obey the Lord your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving 17  you today, the Lord your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth. 28:2 All these blessings will come to you in abundance 18  if you obey the Lord your God: 28:3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field. 19  28:4 Your children 20  will be blessed, as well as the produce of your soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks. 28:5 Your basket and your mixing bowl will be blessed. 28:6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. 21  28:7 The Lord will cause your enemies who attack 22  you to be struck down before you; they will attack you from one direction 23  but flee from you in seven different directions. 28:8 The Lord will decree blessing for you with respect to your barns and in everything you do – yes, he will bless you in the land he 24  is giving you. 28:9 The Lord will designate you as his holy people just as he promised you, if you keep his commandments 25  and obey him. 26  28:10 Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you belong to the Lord, 27  and they will respect you. 28:11 The Lord will greatly multiply your children, 28  the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil in the land which he 29  promised your ancestors 30  he would give you. 28:12 The Lord will open for you his good treasure house, the heavens, to give you rain for the land in its season and to bless all you do; 31  you will lend to many nations but you will not borrow from any. 28:13 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his 32  commandments which I am urging 33  you today to be careful to do. 28:14 But you must not turn away from all the commandments I am giving 34  you today, to either the right or left, nor pursue other gods and worship 35  them.

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Context

30:15 “Look! I have set before you today life and prosperity on the one hand, and death and disaster on the other. 30:16 What 36  I am commanding you today is to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to obey his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances. Then you will live and become numerous and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you are about to possess. 37  30:17 However, if you 38  turn aside and do not obey, but are lured away to worship and serve other gods, 30:18 I declare to you this very day that you will certainly 39  perish! You will not extend your time in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess. 40  30:19 Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live! 30:20 I also call on you 41  to love the Lord your God, to obey him and be loyal to him, for he gives you life and enables you to live continually 42  in the land the Lord promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Isaiah 1:19-20

Context

1:19 If you have a willing attitude and obey, 43

then you will again eat the good crops of the land.

1:20 But if you refuse and rebel,

you will be devoured 44  by the sword.”

Know for certain that the Lord has spoken. 45

Ezekiel 33:25-26

Context
33:25 Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: You eat the meat with the blood still in it, 46  pray to 47  your idols, and shed blood. Do you really think you will possess 48  the land? 33:26 You rely 49  on your swords and commit abominable deeds; each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Will you possess the land?’

[7:17]  1 tn Heb “As for you, if you walk before me, as David your father walked, by doing all which I commanded you, [and] you keep my rules and my regulations.”

[7:18]  2 tn Heb “I will establish the throne of your kingdom.”

[7:18]  3 tn Heb “there will not be cut off from you a man ruling over Israel.”

[7:19]  4 tn The Hebrew pronoun is plural, suggesting that Solomon and all Israel (or perhaps Solomon and his successors) are in view. To convey this to the English reader, the translation “you people” has been employed.

[7:19]  5 tn Heb “which I placed before you.”

[7:19]  6 tn Heb “and walk and serve other gods and bow down to them.”

[7:20]  7 tn Heb “them.” The switch from the second to the third person pronoun is rhetorically effective, for it mirrors God’s rejection of his people – he has stopped addressing them as “you” and begun addressing them as “them.” However, the switch is awkward and confusing in English, so the translation maintains the direct address style.

[7:20]  8 tn Heb “them.” See the note on “you” earlier in this verse.

[7:20]  9 tc Instead of “I will throw away,” the parallel text in 1 Kgs 9:7 has “I will send away.” The two verbs sound very similar in Hebrew, so the discrepancy is likely due to an oral transmissional error.

[7:20]  10 tn Heb “him,” which appears in context to refer to Israel (i.e., “you” in direct address). Many translations understand the direct object of the verb “make” to be the temple (NEB, NASB, NIV, NRSV “it”).

[7:20]  11 tn Heb “and I will make him [i.e., Israel] a proverb and a taunt,” that is, a proverbial example of destruction and an object of reproach.

[7:21]  12 tn Heb “and this house which was high/elevated.” The statement makes little sense in this context, which predicts the desolation that judgment will bring. Some treat the clause as concessive, “Even though this temple is lofty [now].” Others, following the lead of several ancient versions, emend the text to, “this temple will become a heap of ruins.”

[7:22]  13 tn Heb “and they will say.”

[7:22]  14 tn Heb “fathers.”

[7:22]  15 tn Heb “and they took hold of other gods and bowed down to them and served them.”

[28:1]  16 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “indeed.”

[28:1]  17 tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today” (likewise in v. 15).

[28:2]  18 tn Heb “come upon you and overtake you” (so NASB, NRSV); NIV “come upon you and accompany you.”

[28:3]  19 tn Or “in the country” (so NAB, NIV, NLT). This expression also occurs in v. 15.

[28:4]  20 tn Heb “the fruit of your womb” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV).

[28:6]  21 sn Come in…go out. To “come in” and “go out” is a figure of speech (merism) indicating all of life and its activities.

[28:7]  22 tn Heb “who rise up against” (so NIV).

[28:7]  23 tn Heb “way” (also later in this verse and in v. 25).

[28:8]  24 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” Because English would not typically reintroduce the proper name following a relative pronoun (“he will bless…the Lord your God is giving”), the pronoun (“he”) has been employed here in the translation.

[28:9]  25 tn Heb “the commandments of the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in the previous verse.

[28:9]  26 tn Heb “and walk in his ways” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).

[28:10]  27 tn Heb “the name of the Lord is called over you.” The Hebrew idiom indicates ownership; see 2 Sam 12:28; Isa 4:1, as well as BDB 896 s.v. קָרָא Niph. 2.d.(4).

[28:11]  28 tn Heb “the fruit of your womb” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV); CEV “will give you a lot of children.”

[28:11]  29 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 28:8.

[28:11]  30 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 36, 64).

[28:12]  31 tn Heb “all the work of your hands.”

[28:13]  32 tn Heb “the Lord your God’s.” See note on “he” in 28:8.

[28:13]  33 tn Heb “commanding” (so NRSV); NASB “which I charge you today.”

[28:14]  34 tn Heb “from all the words which I am commanding.”

[28:14]  35 tn Heb “in order to serve.”

[30:16]  36 tc A number of LXX mss insert before this verse, “if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,” thus translating אֲשֶׁר (’asher) as “which” and the rest as “I am commanding you today, to love,” etc., “then you will live,” etc.

[30:16]  37 tn Heb “which you are going there to possess it.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[30:17]  38 tn Heb “your heart,” as a metonymy for the person.

[30:18]  39 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “certainly.”

[30:18]  40 tn Heb “to go there to possess it.”

[30:20]  41 tn The words “I also call on you” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text vv. 19-20 are one long sentence, which the translation divides into two.

[30:20]  42 tn Heb “he is your life and the length of your days to live.”

[1:19]  43 tn Heb “listen”; KJV “obedient”; NASB “If you consent and obey.”

[1:20]  44 sn The wordplay in the Hebrew draws attention to the options. The people can obey, in which case they will “eat” v. 19 (תֹּאכֵלוּ [tokhelu], Qal active participle of אָכַל) God’s blessing, or they can disobey, in which case they will be devoured (Heb “eaten,” תְּאֻכְּלוּ, [tÿukkÿlu], Qal passive/Pual of אָכַל) by God’s judgment.

[1:20]  45 tn Heb “for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The introductory כִּי (ki) may be asseverative (as reflected in the translation) or causal/explanatory, explaining why the option chosen by the people will become reality (it is guaranteed by the divine word).

[33:25]  46 sn This practice was a violation of Levitical law (see Lev 19:26).

[33:25]  47 tn Heb “lift up your eyes.”

[33:25]  48 tn Heb “Will you possess?”

[33:26]  49 tn Heb “stand.”
