2 Corinthians 5:12

Context
5:12 We are not trying to commend 1  ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to be proud of us, 2  so that you may be able to answer those who take pride 3  in outward appearance 4  and not in what is in the heart.

2 Corinthians 5:1

Context
Living by Faith, Not by Sight

5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, the tent we live in, 5  is dismantled, 6  we have a building from God, a house not built by human hands, that is eternal in the heavens.

Colossians 3:21-23

Context
3:21 Fathers, 7  do not provoke 8  your children, so they will not become disheartened. 3:22 Slaves, 9  obey your earthly 10  masters in every respect, not only when they are watching – like those who are strictly people-pleasers – but with a sincere heart, fearing the Lord. 3:23 Whatever you are doing, 11  work at it with enthusiasm, 12  as to the Lord and not for people, 13

Philippians 1:26

Context
1:26 so that what you can be proud of may increase 14  because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you. 15

[5:12]  3 tn Or “who boast.”

[5:12]  4 tn Or “in what is seen.”

[5:1]  5 sn The expression the tent we live in refers to “our earthly house, our body.” Paul uses the metaphor of the physical body as a house or tent, the residence of the immaterial part of a person.

[5:1]  6 tn Or “destroyed.”

[3:21]  7 tn Or perhaps “Parents.” The plural οἱ πατέρες (Joi patere", “fathers”) can be used to refer to both the male and female parent (BDAG 786 s.v. πατήρ 1.a).

[3:21]  8 tn Or “do not cause your children to become resentful” (L&N 88.168). BDAG 391 s.v. ἐρεθίζω states, “to cause someone to react in a way that suggests acceptance of a challenge, arouse, provoke mostly in bad sense irritate, embitter.

[3:22]  9 tn On this word here and in 4:1, see the note on “fellow slave” in 1:7.

[3:22]  10 tn The prepositional phrase κατὰ σάρκα (kata sarka) does not necessarily qualify the masters as earthly or human (as opposed to the Master in heaven, the Lord), but could also refer to the sphere in which “the service-relation holds true.” See BDAG 577 s.v. κύριος 1.b.

[3:23]  11 tn The present progressive “are doing” was used in the translation of ποιῆτε (poihte) to bring out the idea that Paul is probably referring to what they already do for work.

[3:23]  12 tn Grk “from the soul.”

[3:23]  13 tn Grk “men”; here ἀνθρώποις (anqrwpoi") is used in a generic sense and refers to people in general.

[1:26]  14 tn Grk “your boasting may overflow in Christ Jesus because of me,” or possibly, “your boasting in me may overflow in Christ Jesus.” BDAG 536 s.v. καύχημα 1 translates the phrase τὸ καύχημα ὑμῶν (to kauchma jJumwn) in Phil 1:26 as “what you can be proud of.”

[1:26]  15 tn Grk “through my coming again to you.”
