3:31 David instructed Joab and all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes! Put on sackcloth! Lament before Abner!” Now King David followed ¹  behind the funeral bier.

2 Samuel 14:2

14:2 So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought from there a wise woman. He told her, “Pretend to be in mourning ²  and put on garments for mourning. Don’t anoint yourself with oil. Instead, act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for some time. ³ 

Genesis 27:41

27:41 So Esau hated ⁴  Jacob because of the blessing his father had given to his brother. ⁵  Esau said privately, ⁶  “The time ⁷  of mourning for my father is near; then I will kill ⁸  my brother Jacob!”

[14:2]  ² tn The Hebrew Hitpael verbal form here indicates pretended rather than genuine action.

[27:41]  ⁴ tn Or “bore a grudge against” (cf. NAB, NASB, NIV). The Hebrew verb שָׂטַם (satam) describes persistent hatred.

[27:41]  ⁵ tn Heb “because of the blessing which his father blessed him.”

[27:41]  ⁶ tn Heb “said in his heart.” The expression may mean “said to himself.” Even if this is the case, v. 42 makes it clear that he must have shared his intentions with someone, because the news reached Rebekah.

[27:41]  ⁸ tn The cohortative here expresses Esau’s determined resolve to kill Jacob.
