Amos 1:6

1:6 This is what the Lord says:

“Because Gaza ¹  has committed three crimes ²  –

make that four! ³  – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. ⁴ 

They deported a whole community ⁵  and sold them ⁶  to Edom.

Amos 1:9

1:9 This is what the Lord says:

“Because Tyre has committed three crimes ⁷  –

make that four! ⁸  – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. ⁹ 

They sold ¹⁰  a whole community ¹¹  to Edom;

they failed to observe ¹²  a treaty of brotherhood. ¹³ 

Amos 6:8

6:8 The sovereign Lord confirms this oath by his very own life. ¹⁴ 

The Lord, the God who commands armies, is speaking:

“I despise Jacob’s arrogance;

I hate their ¹⁵  fortresses.

I will hand over to their enemies ¹⁶  the city of Samaria ¹⁷  and everything in it.”

Amos 7:1

Symbolic Visions of Judgment

7:1 The sovereign Lord showed me this: I saw ¹⁸  him making locusts just as the crops planted late ¹⁹  were beginning to sprout. (The crops planted late sprout after the royal harvest. ²⁰ )

[1:6]  ¹ sn Gaza was one of the five major Philistine cities (along with Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ekron, and Gath). It was considered to mark the southern limit of Canaan at the point on the coast where it was located (Gen 10:19).

[1:6]  ⁵ tn Heb “[group of] exiles.” A number of English translations take this as a collective singular and translate it with a plural (e.g., NAB, NIV, NRSV).

In a treaty between superior and inferior parties, the lord would be called “father” and the subject “son.” The partners in a treaty between equals referred to themselves as “brothers.” For biblical examples, see 1 Kgs 9:13; 20:32-33.

[6:8]  ¹³ tn Heb “swears by his life”; or “swears by himself.”

[6:8]  ¹⁴ tn Heb “his,” referring to Jacob, which stands here for the nation of Israel.

[6:8]  ¹⁵ tn The words “to their enemies” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[6:8]  ¹⁶ tn Heb “the city”; this probably refers to the city of Samaria (cf. 6:1), which in turn, by metonymy, represents the entire northern kingdom.
