Daniel 4:34

Context

4:34 But at the end of the appointed time 1  I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up 2  toward heaven, and my sanity returned to me.

I extolled the Most High,

and I praised and glorified the one who lives forever.

For his authority is an everlasting authority,

and his kingdom extends from one generation to the next.

Job 27:2

Context

27:2 “As surely as God lives, 3  who has denied me justice, 4

the Almighty, who has made my life bitter 5

Jeremiah 4:2

Context

4:2 You must be truthful, honest and upright

when you take an oath saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’ 6

If you do, 7  the nations will pray to be as blessed by him as you are

and will make him the object of their boasting.” 8

[4:34]  1 tn Aram “days.”

[4:34]  2 tn Aram “lifted up my eyes.”

[27:2]  3 tn The expression חַי־אֵל (khay-el) is the oath formula: “as God lives.” In other words, the speaker is staking God’s life on the credibility of the words. It is like saying, “As truly as God is alive.”

[27:2]  4 tn “My judgment” would here, as before, be “my right.” God has taken this away by afflicting Job unjustly (A. B. Davidson, Job, 187).

[27:2]  5 tn The verb הֵמַר (hemar) is the Hiphil perfect from מָרַר (marar, “to be bitter”) and hence, “to make bitter.” The object of the verb is “my soul,” which is better translated as “me” or “my life.”

[4:2]  6 tn Heb “If you [= you must, see the translator’s note on the word “do” later in this verse] swear/take an oath, ‘As the Lord lives,’ in truth, justice, and righteousness…”

[4:2]  7 tn 4:1-2a consists of a number of “if” clauses, two of which are formally introduced by the Hebrew particle אִם (’im) while the others are introduced by the conjunction “and,” followed by a conjunction (“and” = “then”) with a perfect in 4:2b which introduces the consequence. The translation “You must…. If you do,” was chosen to avoid a long and complicated sentence.

[4:2]  8 tn Heb “bless themselves in him and make their boasts in him.”
