[32:36]  1 tn The translation understands the verb in the sense of “be grieved, relent” (cf. HALOT 689 s.v. נחם hitp 2); cf. KJV, ASV “repent himself”; NLT “will change his mind.” Another option is to translate “will show compassion to” (see BDB 637 s.v. נחם); cf. NASB, NIV, NRSV.

[1:16]  2 tn “And” is not in Greek, but is supplied for the sake of English style.

[1:16]  3 tn Or “going.” Though the participle is anarthrous, so also is the subject. Thus, the participle could be either adverbial or adjectival.

[1:16]  4 tn Grk “(who go/going) according to their own lusts.”

[1:16]  5 tn Grk “and their mouth speaks bombastic things.”

[1:16]  6 sn Enchanting folks (Grk “awing faces”) refers to the fact that the speeches of these false teachers are powerful and seductive.

[1:16]  7 tn Or “to their own advantage.”

[1:2]  8 tn Grk “may mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.”

[1:16]  9 tn “And” is not in Greek, but is supplied for the sake of English style.

[1:16]  10 tn Or “going.” Though the participle is anarthrous, so also is the subject. Thus, the participle could be either adverbial or adjectival.

[1:16]  11 tn Grk “(who go/going) according to their own lusts.”

[1:16]  12 tn Grk “and their mouth speaks bombastic things.”

[1:16]  13 sn Enchanting folks (Grk “awing faces”) refers to the fact that the speeches of these false teachers are powerful and seductive.

[1:16]  14 tn Or “to their own advantage.”

[1:2]  15 tn Grk “may mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.”

[1:23]  16 tn Grk “and save.”

[1:23]  17 tn Grk “and have mercy.”

[1:23]  18 tn Grk “with fear.” But as this contrasts with ἀφόβως (afobw") in v. 12 (without reverence), the posture of the false teachers, it most likely refers to reverence for God.

[1:23]  19 sn The imagery here suggests that the things close to the sinners are contaminated by them, presumably during the process of sinning.

[1:23]  20 tn Grk “hating even the tunic spotted by the flesh.” The “flesh” in this instance could refer to the body or to the sin nature. It makes little difference in one sense: Jude is thinking primarily of sexual sins, which are borne of the sin nature and manifest themselves in inappropriate deeds done with the body. At the same time, he is not saying that the body is intrinsically bad, a view held by the opponents of Christianity. Hence, it is best to see “flesh” as referring to the sin nature here and the language as metaphorical.

[106:45]  21 tn The Niphal of נָחַם (nakham) refers here to God relenting from a punishment already underway.

[63:15]  22 tn This probably refers to his zeal for his people, which motivates him to angrily strike out against their enemies.

[63:15]  23 tn The Hebrew text reads literally, “the agitation of your intestines and your compassion to me they are held back.” The phrase “agitation of your intestines” is metonymic, referring to the way in which one’s nervous system reacts when one feels pity and compassion toward another. אֵלַי (’elay, “to me”) is awkward in this context, where the speaker represents the nation and, following the introduction (see v. 7), utilizes first person plural forms. The translation assumes an emendation to the negative particle אַל (’al). This also necessitates emending the following verb form (which is a plural perfect) to a singular jussive (תִתְאַפָּק, titappaq). The Hitpael of אָפַק (’afaq) also occurs in 42:14.

[3:12]  24 tn Heb “Go and proclaim these words to the north.” The translation assumes that the message is directed toward the exiles of northern Israel who have been scattered in the provinces of Assyria to the north.

[3:12]  25 tn Heb “I will not cause my face to fall on you.”

[31:20]  26 tn Heb “Is Ephraim a dear son to me or a child of delight?” For the substitution of Israel for Ephraim and the plural pronouns for the singular see the note on v. 18. According to BDB 210 s.v. הֲ 1.c the question is rhetorical having the force of an impassioned affirmation. See 1 Sam 2:27; Job 41:9 (41:1 HT) for parallel usage.

[31:20]  27 tn Heb “my stomach churns for him.” The parallelism shows that this refers to pity or compassion.

[31:20]  28 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[7:3]  29 tn Or “changed his mind about this.”

[7:6]  30 tn Or “changed his mind about this.”
