Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Context
An Exhortation to Love Both God and People

10:12 Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you except to revere him, 1  to obey all his commandments, 2  to love him, to serve him 3  with all your mind and being, 4  10:13 and to keep the Lord’s commandments and statutes that I am giving 5  you today for your own good?

Deuteronomy 13:4-5

Context
13:4 You must follow the Lord your God and revere only him; and you must observe his commandments, obey him, serve him, and remain loyal to him. 13:5 As for that prophet or dreamer, 6  he must be executed because he encouraged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, redeeming you from that place of slavery, and because he has tried to entice you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to go. In this way you must purge out evil from within. 7

Deuteronomy 30:16

Context
30:16 What 8  I am commanding you today is to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways, and to obey his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances. Then you will live and become numerous and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you are about to possess. 9

Joshua 22:5

Context
22:5 But carefully obey the commands and instructions Moses the Lord’s servant gave you. Love 10  the Lord your God, follow all his instructions, 11  obey 12  his commands, be loyal to him, 13  and serve him with all your heart and being!” 14

Joshua 22:1

Context
Joshua Sends Home the Eastern Tribes

22:1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

Joshua 2:3-4

Context
2:3 So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab: 15  “Turn over 16  the men who came to you 17  – the ones who came to your house 18  – for they have come to spy on the whole land!” 2:4 But the woman hid the two men 19  and replied, “Yes, these men were clients of mine, 20  but I didn’t know where they came from.

[10:12]  1 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 10:4.

[10:12]  2 tn Heb “to walk in all his ways” (so KJV, NIV, NRSV); NAB “follow his ways exactly”; NLT “to live according to his will.”

[10:12]  3 tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 10:4.

[10:12]  4 tn Heb “heart and soul” or “heart and being”; NCV “with your whole being.” See note on the word “being” in Deut 6:5.

[10:13]  5 tn Heb “commanding” (so NASB, NRSV). For stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy, “giving” has been used in the translation.

[13:5]  6 tn Heb “or dreamer of dreams.” See note on this expression in v. 1.

[13:5]  7 tn Heb “your midst” (so NAB, NRSV). The severity of the judgment here (i.e., capital punishment) is because of the severity of the sin, namely, high treason against the Great King. Idolatry is a violation of the first two commandments (Deut 5:6-10) as well as the spirit and intent of the Shema (Deut 6:4-5).

[30:16]  8 tc A number of LXX mss insert before this verse, “if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God,” thus translating אֲשֶׁר (’asher) as “which” and the rest as “I am commanding you today, to love,” etc., “then you will live,” etc.

[30:16]  9 tn Heb “which you are going there to possess it.” This has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[22:5]  10 tn Heb “But be very careful to do the commandment and the law which Moses, the Lord’s servant, commanded you, to love.”

[22:5]  11 tn Heb “walk in all his paths.”

[22:5]  12 tn Or “keep.”

[22:5]  13 tn Heb “hug him.”

[22:5]  14 tn Or “soul.”

[2:3]  15 tn Heb “and the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying.”

[2:3]  16 tn Heb “bring out.”

[2:3]  17 tn The idiom “come to” (בוֹא אֶל, bo’ ’el) probably has sexual connotations here, as it often does elsewhere when a man “comes to” a woman. If so, the phrase could be translated “your clients.” The instructions reflect Rahab’s perspective as to the identity of the men.

[2:3]  18 tn The words “the ones who came to your house” (Heb “who came to your house”) may be a euphemistic scribal addition designed to blur the sexual connotation of the preceding words.

[2:4]  19 tn Heb “The woman took the two men and hid him.” The third masculine singular pronominal suffix on “hid” has to be a scribal error (see GKC §135.p).

[2:4]  20 tn Heb “the men came to me.” See the note on this phrase in v. 3.
