Deuteronomy 13:9

13:9 Instead, you must kill him without fail! ¹  Your own hand must be the first to strike him, ²  and then the hands of the whole community.

Acts 7:58-59

7:58 When ³  they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him, ⁴  and the witnesses laid their cloaks ⁵  at the feet of a young man named Saul. 7:59 They ⁶  continued to stone Stephen while he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

[13:9]  ¹ tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with the words “without fail” (cf. NIV “you must certainly put him to death”).

[13:9]  ² tn Heb “to put him to death,” but this is misleading in English for such an action would leave nothing for the others to do.

[7:58]  ³ tn Grk “And when.” Because of the length of the Greek sentence and the tendency of contemporary English style to use shorter sentences, καί (kai) has not been translated here; a new sentence is begun instead.

[7:58]  ⁴ sn They began to stone him. The irony of the scene is that the people do exactly what the speech complains about in v. 52.
