16:9 You must count seven weeks; you must begin to count them 1  from the time you begin to harvest the standing grain.

[16:9]  1 tn Heb “the seven weeks.” The translation uses a pronoun to avoid redundancy in English.

[2:25]  2 tn Heb “under heaven” (so NIV, NRSV).

[2:25]  3 tn Heb “from before you.”

[28:30]  3 tc For MT reading שָׁגַל (shagal, “ravish; violate”), the Syriac, Targum, and Vulgate presume the less violent שָׁכַב (shakhav, “lie with”). The unexpected counterpart to betrothal here favors the originality of the MT.

[2:24]  4 sn Heshbon is the name of a prominent site (now Tell Hesba„n, about 7.5 mi [12 km] south southwest of Amman, Jordan). Sihon made it his capital after having driven Moab from the area and forced them south to the Arnon (Num 21:26-30). Heshbon is also mentioned in Deut 1:4.

[3:24]  5 tn Heb “Lord Lord.” The phrase אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה (’adonay yÿhvih) is customarily rendered by Jewish tradition as “Lord God.” Cf. NIV, TEV, NLT “Sovereign Lord.”

[3:24]  6 tn Heb “your servant.” The pronoun is used in the translation to clarify that Moses is speaking of himself, since in contemporary English one does not usually refer to oneself in third person.

[3:24]  7 tn Heb “your strong hand” (so NIV), a symbol of God’s activity.
