Deuteronomy 18:15
Context18:15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you – from your fellow Israelites; 1 you must listen to him.
John 1:45
Context1:45 Philip found Nathanael 2 and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also 3 wrote about – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
[18:15] 1 tc The MT expands here on the usual formula by adding “from among you” (cf. Deut 17:15; 18:18; Smr; a number of Greek texts). The expansion seems to be for the purpose of emphasis, i.e., the prophet to come must be not just from Israel but an Israelite by blood.
[1:45] 2 sn Nathanael is traditionally identified with Bartholomew (although John never describes him as such). He appears here after Philip, while in all lists of the twelve except in Acts 1:13, Bartholomew follows Philip. Also, the Aramaic Bar-tolmai means “son of Tolmai,” the surname; the man almost certainly had another name.
[1:45] 3 tn “Also” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.
