Esther 3:15

Context
3:15 The messengers 1  scurried forth 2  with the king’s order. 3  The edict was issued in Susa the citadel. While the king and Haman sat down to drink, the city of Susa was in an uproar! 4

Micah 7:4

Context

7:4 The best of them is like a thorn;

the most godly among them are more dangerous than a row of thorn bushes. 5

The day you try to avoid by posting watchmen –

your appointed time of punishment – is on the way, 6

and then you will experience confusion. 7

[3:15]  1 tn Heb “runners.” So also in 8:10, 14. Cf. NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV “couriers.”

[3:15]  2 tn Or “went forth in haste” (so ASV).

[3:15]  3 tn Heb “with the word of the king.”

[3:15]  4 sn The city of Susa was in an uproar. This final statement of v. 15 is a sad commentary on the pathetic disregard of despots for the human misery and suffering that they sometimes inflict on those who are helpless to resist their power. Here, while common people braced for the reckless loss of life and property that was about to begin, the perpetrators went about their mundane activities as though nothing of importance was happening.

[7:4]  5 tn Heb “[the] godly from a row of thorn bushes.” The preposition מִן (min) is comparative and the comparative element (perhaps “sharper” is the idea) is omitted. See BDB 582 s.v. 6 and GKC 431 §133.e.

[7:4]  6 tn Heb “the day of your watchmen, your appointed [time], is coming.” The present translation takes “watchmen” to refer to actual sentries. However, the “watchmen” could refer figuratively to the prophets who had warned Judah of approaching judgment. In this case one could translate, “The day your prophets warned about – your appointed time of punishment – is on the way.”

[7:4]  7 tn Heb “and now will be their confusion.”
