Exodus 17:9

17:9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our ¹  men and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”

Joshua 8:10

8:10 Bright and early the next morning Joshua gathered ²  the army, ³  and he and the leaders ⁴  of Israel marched ⁵  at the head of it ⁶  to Ai.

[17:9]  ¹ tn This could be rendered literally “choose men for us.” But the lamed (ל) preposition probably indicates possession, “our men,” and the fact that Joshua was to choose from Israel, as well as the fact that there is no article on “men,” indicates he was to select some to fight.

[8:10]  ² tn Or “summoned, mustered.”

[8:10]  ³ tn Heb “the people.”

[8:10]  ⁴ tn Or “elders.”

[8:10]  ⁵ tn Heb “went up.”

[8:10]  ⁶ tn Heb “them” (referring to “the people” in the previous clause, which requires a plural pronoun). Since the translation used “army” in the previous clause, a singular pronoun (“it”) is required in English.
