Exodus 23:28-30

23:28 I will send ¹  hornets before you that will drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite before you. 23:29 I will not drive them out before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the wild animals ²  multiply against you. 23:30 Little by little ³  I will drive them out before you, until you become fruitful and inherit the land.

Joshua 24:12

24:12 I sent terror ⁴  ahead of you to drive out before you the two ⁵  Amorite kings. I gave you the victory; it was not by your swords or bows. ⁶ 

[23:28]  ¹ tn Heb “and I will send.”

[23:29]  ² tn Heb “the beast of the field.”

[23:30]  ³ tn The repetition expresses an exceptional or super-fine quality (see GKC 396 §123.e).

[24:12]  ⁴ tn Traditionally, “the hornet” (so KJV, NKJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV) but the precise meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain (cf. NEB “panic”).

[24:12]  ⁵ tn The LXX has “twelve,” apparently understanding this as a reference to Amorite kings west of the Jordan (see Josh 5:1, rather than the trans-Jordanian Amorite kings Sihon and Og (see Josh 2:10; 9:10).

[24:12]  ⁶ tn Heb “and it drove them out from before you, the two kings of the Amorites, not by your sword and not by your bow.” The words “I gave you the victory” are supplied for clarification.
