[24:4]  1 tn Heb “to return to take her to be his wife.”

[24:4]  2 sn The issue here is not divorce and its grounds per se but prohibition of remarriage to a mate whom one has previously divorced.

[24:4]  3 tn Heb “cause the land to sin” (so KJV, ASV).

[24:1]  4 tn Heb “nakedness of a thing.” The Hebrew phrase עֶרְוַת דָּבָר (’ervat davar) refers here to some gross sexual impropriety (see note on “indecent” in Deut 23:14). Though the term usually has to do only with indecent exposure of the genitals, it can also include such behavior as adultery (cf. Lev 18:6-18; 20:11, 17, 20-21; Ezek 22:10; 23:29; Hos 2:10).

[14:16]  5 tn The Hebrew term תִּנְשֶׁמֶת (tinshemet) may refer to a species of owl (cf. ASV “horned owl”; NASB, NIV, NLT “white owl”) or perhaps even to the swan (so KJV); cf. NRSV “water hen.”

[15:1]  6 tn The Hebrew term שְׁמִטָּת (shÿmittat), a derivative of the verb שָׁמַט (shamat, “to release; to relinquish”), refers to the cancellation of the debt and even pledges for the debt of a borrower by his creditor. This could be a full and final remission or, more likely, one for the seventh year only. See R. Wakely, NIDOTTE 4:155-60. Here the words “of debts” are not in the Hebrew text, but are implied. Cf. NAB “a relaxation of debts”; NASB, NRSV “a remission of debts.”

[15:1]  7 tn The Hebrew term שְׁמִטָּת (shÿmittat), a derivative of the verb שָׁמַט (shamat, “to release; to relinquish”), refers to the cancellation of the debt and even pledges for the debt of a borrower by his creditor.

[16:19]  8 tn Heb “twist, overturn”; NRSV “subverts the cause.”

[16:19]  9 tn Or “innocent”; NRSV “those who are in the right”; NLT “the godly.”

[21:22]  10 tn Heb “him.”

[21:2]  11 tn Heb “surrounding the slain [one].”

[3:3]  12 tn Heb “was left to him.” The final phrase “to him” is redundant in English and has been left untranslated.

[21:11]  13 tn Heb “the prisoners.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.

[21:2]  14 tn Heb “surrounding the slain [one].”

[23:15]  15 tn The Hebrew text includes “from his master,” but this would be redundant in English style.

[23:2]  16 tn Or “a person born of an illegitimate marriage.”

[23:2]  17 tn Heb “enter the assembly of the Lord.” The phrase “do so” has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[33:9]  18 sn This statement no doubt alludes to the Levites’ destruction of their own fellow tribesmen following the golden calf incident (Exod 32:25-29).
